People Eat Scorpions

What’s the first thought that comes to mind when I say that people eat scorpions? Is it, “Yuck!” You’d probably think that people wouldn’t like arthropods like insects and arachnids. But what if I told you we already eat other arthropods that are quite popular and delicious. That’s right, crustaceans like crabs, lobsters, and shrimp are arthropods just like scorpions and insects.  What’s your favorite crustacean?

Because humans are omnivores, it makes sense that our natural diet can include traditional meat, fruits and vegetables, and arthropods as well! What’s an omnivore? And pound for pound, arthropods are a leaner, healthier protein than we find in our traditional meat! Scorpions, in particular, are considered a delicacy in many parts of the world including Asia, North Africa, and parts of Australia. Some people think that eating the tail has special health benefits. People fry them, boil them, roast them, and even eat them raw!

Because venom isn’t poison, it poses no threat when you eat it. You can learn about the differences of venomous vs poisonous. Others simply think that scorpions are an exciting meal. One thing is for certain, eating arachnids and insects are healthy for your body and also healthy for the environment, as they’re a very sustainable resource!
