The Greenhouse Effect

What is the Greenhouse Effect?

Have you ever wondered what makes our planet a comfortable and warm place to live on? Well, the greenhouse effect is responsible for keeping Earth warm enough for us and other living beings. That is to say, the planet would be too cold without the greenhouse effect which would make it hard for any living beings to survive.
So what exactly is the greenhouse effect? It is a natural effect in which greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere to make Earth warm. Furthermore, it is important for us to know what this effect is and how it works so we can help our planet. As mentioned before, the greenhouse effect is a natural and essential process to living beings. But, human activity has caused a high concentration of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere making the temperature of our planet rise more than it needs to. Thus, leading to climate change and global warming.

How does the Greenhouse Effect work?

  1. Solar radiation reaches the Earth and some of it bounces back into space.
  2. The rest of the Sun's energy is absorbed by the oceans and land.
  3. Heat radiates from Earth towards Space.
  4. Some of this heat is trapped by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
  5. Human activities such as burning fossil fuels, agriculture, and land clearing are increasing the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere.
  6. This is causing extra heat and causes the Earth's temperature to rise.

How can we reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Drive less
  • Use less heat and air conditioning
  • Replace your light bulbs
  • Use less hot water
  • Buy energy-efficient products
  • Plant a tree or other plants
  • Encourage others to conserve
